For the past eight years Beach Road Cyclist (BRC) has been a prominent voice for the safety concerns of on-road cyclists, particularly those relating to Beach Road in bay side Melbourne.
As all road riders know, safety is a major issue confronting cyclists in Australia and around the world.
One of our shared long term goals is the self-initiated and soon to be achieved morning-only weekend clearways along Beach Road.
Given the massive growth of road cycling along Beach Road in recent years, first and foremost for BRC has been the need for safer conditions and increased awareness for all road users.
BRC also acknowledges the hard work of fellow cycling advocate Michael Forbes for his excellent awareness raising of local issues and the recent “No Stopping Zone ” petition to the Bayside Council.
The Victorian Minister Road and Ports, Tim Pallas has stated once again to Bayside Council his public support for morning-only weekend “No Stopping” zones (clearways) along Beach Road. Mr Pallas also mentioned this support for the clearways in discussions with BRC representatives in 2009.
Tim Pallas has also publicly stated that bicycle registration is impractical and non cost-effective, in response to Bayside Councils request for him to investigate the possibility. (1)
He has also stated that recent feedback given to Victoria Police in regards to cyclist behaviour has been positive.
Bob Cameron, Minister for Police and Emergency has also mentioned that road cyclists on Beach Road have a higher compliance with road rules than shared path recreational cyclists. In the light of continued negative media portrayals of rider behaviour, this is a very positive reflection on the Beach Road cycling community. (2)
BRC therefore calls for all interested cyclists to attend an important Bayside Council meeting on Tuesday 22nd June to either speak in favor of the “No Stopping” zones or attend to support your fellow riders and road users.
This is not just about Beach Road but about setting a precedence on cycling safety in in Victoria.
