ABC Online: Risk for cyclists ‘increasing’ on Beach Rd
Melbourne cyclists say the lack of clearways along Beach Road is putting bike riders at risk of serious injury.
A new survey by Bicycle Victoria has revealed there are almost three times as many bikes as cars on the road between Port Melbourne and Mordialloc on weekend mornings.
The cyclists have to share one lane of traffic with other moving vehicles, because the left-hand lane is used by parked cars.
Beach Road cyclist Trevor Burridge* says the road is getting increasingly dangerous.
“Where you have a bunch of riders going past parked cars and you get impatient car drivers, it’s always very close, you can have cars brush past your arm, brush past your leg,” he said.
“I’ve actually been knocked down a couple of times, I’ve been knocked down other places as well by cars, but wherever you’ve got squeeze points, and parked cars constitute squeeze points, it’s very easy to have cars go very close.”
